Labeled the System Update Readiness Tool, the utility comes in handy in various scenarios when updates can no longer be integrated on top of Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008 SP1. An illustrative example of a glitch end users might stumble upon is a failed install of either Windows Vista Service Pack 2 or Windows Server 2009 SP2 accompanied by the following error code: 80070490."

“To resolve this problem, run the System Update Readiness Tool (Checksur.exe),” Microsoft indicates. In the description of the tool, the company notes, “This tool is being offered because an inconsistency was found in the Windows servicing store which may prevent the successful installation of future updates, service packs, and software. This tool checks your computer for such inconsistencies and tries to resolve issues if found.”

"In certain scenarios, especially when users have been running a copy of Vista SP1 for a long time, some components break down. An operating system that fails to deploy updates has suffered various Windows servicing store problems. In such a case, the issues affect not just plain-vanilla updates, but also major upgrades to the operating system, namely service-pack releases."

“System resources, such as file data, registry data, and even in-memory data, can develop inconsistencies during the lifetime of the operating system. These inconsistencies might be caused by various hardware failures or might be caused by software issues. In some cases, these inconsistencies can affect the Windows servicing store, and they can cause software updates not to work. The System Update Readiness Tool tries to resolve these inconsistencies,” Microsoft reveals.

"The Redmond company has acted proactively with the availability of the System Update Readiness Tool. The utility has already been served automatically through Windows Update, as the software giant has attempted to deal with any problems that could prevent SP2 to be installed on top of Windows Vista. At the same time, Checksur.exe is also available for manual download, coming in handy to users that have disabled Automatic Updates."

“After you download the System Update Readiness Tool, it runs a onetime scan for inconsistencies that might prevent future servicing operations. This scan typically takes less than 15 minutes to run. However, the tool might take significantly longer on some computers. The Windows Update progress bar is not updated during the scan, and progress seems to stop at 60% complete for some time. This behavior is expected. The scan is still running and you should not cancel the update,” Microsoft adds.

- Windows Vista 32-bit and Windows Server 2008 32-bit - System Update Readiness Tool (KB947821) http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=b4d90b06-c27d-4483-bc1f-04d43fa7b293&displaylang=en

- Windows Vista 64-bit and Windows Server 2008 SP1 64-bit - System Update Readiness Tool for x64-based Systems (KB947821) http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=f6f353c0-d00e-43e7-97ef-0feefc7ff064&displaylang=en

Vista Upgrade Advisor

I'm running XP and wish to upgrade to Windows 7 via Vista upgrade to preserve extensive list of programs.

I've a report successfully saved and printed regarding Windows 7 compatability but having downloaded and installed the Vista Upgrade Advisor this fails because the "featured you are trying to use ..............." & "Insert the Microsoft Windows Vista Upgrade Disc ........."

I've downloaded the Advisor software from Microsft site and installed and run on two different systems. My two drives and on RAID 0, they are both 40gb. in my RAID configure it comes out to be like 78gb for the two. In vista its 72gb. So I click New and it gives me that error ("Failed to create a new partition on the selected unused space"). When I make the partition using 70gb of the unollocated space it takes about 5-10 minutes then pops up again but with a different number at the end. Any ideas? I tried "dd if=/dev/zero of =/dev/sda bs=128k & dd if=/dev/zero of =/dev/sdb bs=128k" from the linux live cd and still no luck. I also created a ntfs (no luck) and a fat file system on them. Basically what I have been doing in the past couple of days was try to get the PC as how it was when it was first bought, because my brother had been using it for a while and I wasn't sure what he deleted or didn't delete and whether or not my computer was how it really should be. I also have installed AOL Explorer (my personal favorite browser) on vista and it either sucks butt on vista or I was just pretty damn unlucky with it. Not only could I make it my default browser but it would not even open up after installing (sometimes, because I installed and uninstalled it many times due to it being a nuisance) it and it is a pain to uninstall, because even when you "uninstall" it, it still has many files left on your computer and for some reason I thought it installed files that were not even in the AOL Explorer program folder in the "program files" of my C drive.

Basically what that got me to do was search for any file that had "AOL" on it and delete it. It is then I realized those files were not really part of AOL Explorer but part of other programs and those files just happened to have "aol" in the name.

So what I went and did was put in the vista cd the computer came with and instead of "upgrading" vista, I installed a fresh new one, using the custom installation (not really custom just installing vista over again) and lo and behold, when I make a username and start from scratch, I notice two very awful things. Not only is my screen crappy looking and I don't have the 1200 X 1000 resolution option anymore in my display options, I am not even able to connect the internet. Wtf? What does that have to do with installing a fresh copy of windows? What does windows have to do with my screen options and my internet? Anyway I have all the cds with me. Please tell me what I have to do to get my computer back to the way it's supposed to be.

Thanks.

need help

hi i have got a problem and request for a reply/solution. I also like to reinstall every few months. Anyway, I have been running Windows Vista on the computer for awhile now, the computer was made for XP, but it ran Vista just fine. I figured instead of installing Vista again, I would install XP, just so I could get the best performance out of my computer. Well I went to install Windows XP from my CD, formatting my hard drive, deleting all partitions. Created a new partition and then it started copying files. It finished copying files, said 15 seconds until restart, so I let it go, it restarted and all was fine. Then it went passed the HP screen, it said Press any key to boot from CD....Error loading operating system.

I have installed a OS many times, and it has always said Press any key to boot from CD.... then it finishes installation. Now it says Error loading operating system.

I tried it again, formatting everything. Same thing.

Then I loaded the default BIOS configuration. Tried it again, same thing.

Then I tried to install Vista, same exact thing happen, after the first reboot, it said Press any key to boot from CD or DVD.... but then nothing happens after that. Cant even press any key to load from CD (after the 5 dots went across after DVD.....).

I always took out my video card, and plugged my monitor into the original motherboard monitor slot.

Now, I really don't care which I have installed.... So I tried to be smart, and installed Vista on a SATA hard drive that was connected to the SATA cable of a PC. The HD was then put in an enclosure connected via USB to the laptop. However, when trying a reboot on the USB drive, it got started (which means it recognized the System on the external HD), then the loading stops with a blue screen and the machine get restarted. I believe there should be an incompatibility in the way vista was installed (as a main HD "C:") and the way it tries to load (as an external HD "F:"). I have no clue how to repair the installation on the external HD, I tried the "Repair" function from the vista DVD but it didn't help, same problem after repair. May be things have to be repaired manually?

any help will be appreciated.

Uninstalling Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit

I replaced an Asus M2N-SLI mobo for an Asus M3N-HT Deluxe Series mobo that has Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit installed on the SATA 1 HD. First of all, I had issues trying to get the computer to actually begin installing Windows, I got over that by getting the PC to boot from the DVD drive. The install appeared to be going smoothly after that. I went through the menus until it asked me which hard drive to install too. It only shows one hard drive on the menu (marked as "Drive 1 Unalloted Space"), even though I know this PC has two. When I click "Install" it tells me that the hard drive is not suitable for windows to install too. It suggests that I go into BIOS and check that the hard drives controller is on. I have checked and it is, but Windows will still not install too this hard drive. There is plenty of free space (465GB). I'd really like to solve this problem and get the PC going again as it has been sitting around for a long time without an operating system.
Appreciate any help or guidance :)

Installing Vista Business OEM 64-bit over a Home Basic trial

Hello,

So finally I have some extra time to backup everything in my old PC to an external HDD and move onto my new PC that I have bought a month ago.

It already has a Vista Home Basic trial installed but it has ended by now. It also has a couple of drivers already installed. However I have an OEM CD of Vista Business 64 that I'm going to use and I also want to have Vista to be in it's own partition. It's been a long time I had to format and create partitions so I don't remember much. And it was with XP then, not Vista.

I was planning to format the drive and then install Vista Business 64, but I've been told I can simply select an 'upgrade' option from Home Basic to Business and keep the rest as it is. Is this true?

I also know you can create a partition in Vista, but can it be created in the drive where Vista is already installed? Like for example it's installed on a 640GB drive. Can I split it and have Vista be in a 80GB drive while the other 560GB are in a new completely empty partition?

Also, in case I decide to format instead, should I do Quick Format or Format? I've been told the only thing normal format does is check for errors at the end. Taking in consideration that Vista Home Basic is currently installed is Quick Format acceptable?

I'm planning on doing this tomorrow so the sooner someone could answer these the better!

Thanks! :)

Can I order Vista 64 media from Microsoft with Vista 32 (upgrade) License?

I'm building an HTPC. I would like to run Vista 64. It's my understanding that you can order the 64bit DVD media from Microsoft if you own Vista 32.

I have a dialog with someone who has Vista 32 (upgrade) version that I can get on the cheap. That's OK as I have both Windows 2000 and Windows XP from which to upgrade (I'm also aware of the clean install trick) but that's not the question.

I understand that you can't directly upgrade to Vista 64 (It has to be a clean install). Given that, can I order Vista 64 media from Microsoft with Vista 32 (upgrade) License or do I require the full version License to qualify?

In vista ADMINISTRATOR (for permissions) USERNAME and PASSWORD must be setup (required?) during installation or may do not needed ?

I have a DSL MODEM with wireless g function , well is needed setup anything in windows for security when PC is on (modem is always on) ?

In vista ADMINISTRATOR (for permissions) USERNAME and PASSWORD must be setup (required?) during installation or may do not needed ? It worked well for a year, and then I had hard drive issues. I contacted dell and they sent me a new to me, refurbished hard drive. I should also note that these particular Dell hardrives come with a 10gb partition for the Dell Recovery BS. I formatted this partition and was using it for random storage. All was well.

This previous week (about a year from new HD) I decide it's time for a reformat as things are running mucky. I also want to remove the 10bg partition which is driving me nuts everytime I open explorer. I download and run gparted from a DVD to do so. While in gparted, I find that my hard drive also has a small 2.5 gb partition to the right of the C drive (what was the recovery portion was to the left). there's also a 31mb partition to the left od the recovery drive (apperantly this is for the media keys, i don't mess wit it) I try to add the 2.5 gb and the 10gb to the C drive, and I get an error messege which I don't remeber. I boot back into windows, wipe out the 2.5gb and add it to the C drive with the control panel manager app. Go back into gparted, and try to add the 10 gb portion to the C drive. It works. Cool, now everything is partitioned as I want it too be, cept there's still that weird 31mb tom foolery, but I'll let it hang, I like my media keys.

I try to boot into windows, no go, just a black screen with the blinking white line. So moving that partition around clearly screwed my windows install. No biggy, I was ready to roll on the reformat any way. I boot into Darik's Boot and Nuke and blow the crap out of everything. Put in a streamlined windows SP1 install disc I made with vlite from my Dell OEM vista CD, and get ready to rock. Format the HD, and install windows. Windows installs, setup my profile and all that jazz. Because my streamline has SP1 it jumps into that, and installs it right away. This is where the real problems start. Windows won't boot, and gives me a messege about using the repair utility on my windows CD. It gives me an error messege, which I neglect to write down and says something along the lines of "a recent update may have ****ed you in the ***, try using the rpair utlities". The repair utility does not help. It's VERY possible that I messed up creating the streamline, it was my first time using the program, and I finalized an iso, then went back and chnaged it. Screw this. I get out the original Dell OEM CD. Format with that, install it. This time though, I don't even get that far. Everything's peachy after "installing updates" the computer reboots after telling me it's going to, then I get the "preparing to load into windows for the first time" and then it comes back to "completing installtion" and hangs there (note: with the streamline it blasted through this step). Nothing happens. I leave it for about 3 hours. The screen is black the mouse is there, but nothing. I don't even get to the profile creation like I did with the streamline. I reboot, try to load into windows, gives me the "windows was shut down improperly" msg. If I try to boot into safe mode it hangs at crcdsk.sys being the last thing loaded. If I try to run normally, or with last known good config, it just hangs at an eternal loading bar. I've run all the diagnostics on the windows repair portion of the CD and in my BIOS (the option when pressing f12) I haven't done any of the F8 stuff.

I'm starting to think that this can be solved if I make a streamlined vlite disc without being a retard.

Just to make it a little tougher though, this weekend I don't have a DVD burner with me, I've effectively nuked the only one I had, so hopefull the solution doesn't involve this.
:hehe:
Thanks for reading my wall of text.
