The issue I had with my clean vista install was misleading. Vista would identify my on board sound hardware and even report that is was a Realtek HD audio device and that it had the most up to date drivers available. This was not really the case. Vista was really using a generic driver. It gave me the most basic of sound functionality, but when it came to things like microphone inputs and channel mixing it didn't work. I recommend at the very least to run the driver setup from the disk that came with your sound hardware or in the case of an on board sound device, it would most likely come from the disk that came with your motherboard.

Once that is done you could, if need be, get the latest drivers from the manufacturer of your audio chip set. And yes, you should disable the integrated sound functionality if you have an after market sound board. never a good idea to leave an integrated peripheral turned on when you install an add on board to replace it.

Unfortunately ... what we would suggest is exactly the same stuff you've already done: check with HP for drivers, google for driver updates, reinstall the devices to see if Vista then will hunt down a new driver.

The only thing left is to use the Device Manager to upgrade the drivers -- or at least to see if Vista can find a newer driver.

Do you have both onboard audio and a sound card? If so, disable the onboard audio in the BIOS and try the same stuff again.

Recently wiped out my HP Pavilion 793c and did a clean installation of Windows Vista. After doing this I have lost the audio. I now realize that my HP is not compatible with the Vista upgrade, but I am optimistic someone can point me in the right direction toward fixing this problem. I have Realtek AC 97 and Soundblaster Live! soundcards. My audio icon on the toolbar has a red circled "x" and says "No audio output device is installed" when I scroll over it. In the device manager I have 3 items with an exclamation point in a yellow triangle. They are under "Other Devices"... Multimedia Audio Controller, PCI Input Device, and Unknown Device. I have tried downloading updates from HP as well as Realtek, but to no avail. I have also tried uninstalling these devices in the hopes that the automatic install after re-booting would fix the problem. It didn't. I have been searching the web for days trying to find an answer... Please help!!
