It is interesting but the X1950 XT is on the same level as the 8600 so i'd go for the 8800 if i were you.

RE: Vista & HellGate

It should handle it with power to spare, but as a matter of preference I would try to push myself to the 8800 mid range cards they will cope with a significantly higher work load in case other near launch games require that bit extra (actually the transitor count is a lot less on the 8600 even on a 0.08 scale, 8800 are 0.09 but allthough the 8600 pushes the core speed to a much higher level it has little benefit since the bottleneck is further down the line in the bus bandwidth, the 8800 bandwidth is considerably wider and should do away with that bottleneck.

I don't know what prices you have seen but the 8800 mid range seem to be at about £110 to £180 depending on manufacturer which isn't very much more than the 8600 price ranges at the higher and better built end, I'm sure you would be happier much longer knowing you have resources to spare for the future rather than get a card which will undoubtedly handle Hellgate easily but with little contingency reserves for the future, in that I'm thinking only a month or two later than Hellgate.

RE: Vista & HellGate

Certainly. Does anyone know if the new 8600 Budget NVIDIA will be able to handle Hellgate (The only game I really, really, really want to play this year) at any decent framerate, It'll be going alongside a new Core-Duo CPU, if that's any help.

I gave up on video cards after the "everyone cheat at benchmarks" scam a few years back and don't care who's winning the framerate and throughput wars, I just want a card that will do the job, so any suggestions welcome.

Goff
