Advanced Tricks For Getting Specific Games To Work - Note: Most users WILL NOT be able to accomplish these workarounds, but I decided to put these solutions here for the few who can.

Ok I figured out ways to get certain other games that weren't working before.

The following fix for Riven applies only to the 64bit version of Vista, 32bit "probably" works fine as it still contains support for 16bit applications.

Riven - This is a tricky one, and most users won't be able to pull this off very well, but I thought I might as well list the solution for the few who can.

The trick with Riven is the Installer ONLY is 16bit, the entire rest of the game is 32bit, so if you can get the install files copied onto your harddrive somehow the actual gameplay will work fine. Aside from that all you need to do is run the "Quicktime for Windows(don't worry it's a 32bit installer)" off of the disc, and the rest of the game works fine. The way I did it personally, was I have 2 different computers in my room, I installed Riven on my older computer which runs 32bit XP, then copied the game folder over my LAN to my Vista PC.

Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault-

This game works fine in Vista IF you can get past the installer itself. That's the difficult part.

What happens is when trying to install Pacific Assault, the installer will ask for you to insert the next disc, if you're running the CD version, it will not be able to detect it, so the installer can't complete. As far as I know though, "apparently" the DVD version installs just fine, although I can't confirm this.

I on the other DO have the CD version, so once again I did the same thing that I did with Riven, copied the files from my other computer onto this one, and the game works fine.

Rayman 2: The Great Escape still does not work no matter what I try. Still looking into a possible fix... but there doesn't seem to be any hope as of yet.

Have you tried reinstalling the game? Maybe the files got corrupted somehow...

I'm not really sure what to tell you :\ I installed Vista SP1 the other day and Starship Troopers still works perfectly, no compatibility settings required.

You may have answered your own question. You said you had to set it to "Win XP SP1" compatibility to get it to work, but since then, you installed Vista SP1. Looks clearly like Vista SP1 changed something that WinXP SP1 expected NOT to change.

The list of Vista SP-1 related changes is immense. There's a post in our forum that takes you to the MS link so you can see the list. It's not going to be possible to uninstall or test every single change to see which one, if any, "broke" this one game.

Don't be surprised if Vista SP1 does this for other games as well.

Above, one of the posters mentions that Starship Troopers PC (2005) worked. When I first installed Vista on my new rig about 1.5 years ago, it worked just fine. For some reason, I tried playing it in the past 4 months and it does not work. Did Vista install an update that actually made it incompatible?? I've got all my drivers up to date, installed Vista SP1, have all the compatibility steps done (checked Compatible with Windows XP SP1, ran as administrator, etc.), yet it doesn't work! When I don't have XP SP1 checked, it pulls up the logo, goes to a dark screen, then says the game stopped responding. When I do check XP SP1, it says that there's no DVD in the drive for the game (even though there clearly is!). I'm at wits end about this.

So far for the most part, it seems that Microsoft has really gotten their act together I finally just recently replaced XP Pro with Vista Ultimate, happily I might add too ;) Most stable and entertaining OS yet. Though It's sad I can't play Rayman 2 on it for now :(

Anybody having Problems with GHost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2? I Do. Based on the game box cover, all the specs meet basic criteria. Based on website diagnostic, all specs meet requirement, but when I Install the Game, it Says graphic driver version did not meet requirement and that it has to be 6683 or higher. I have talked to a couple of support techs, one advices uninstall driver and reinstall, which i did, still the same problem and the other one blames it on Vista. Anyway, end of the day I am stuck with the same problem with no hint of a solution. Any input Vista gamers out there would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

I know for sure Knight's Of The Old Republic 1 & 2, Myst 4, URU all work fine on Vista I think one (can't remember which) needs to be run in XP sp2 compat. mode and I would be very hopeful UFO would run too albeit with compat. mode turned on for it.

I play and test for installs for other peoples machines very many games and there are really very few that don't work under Vista, Vista's compatibilty mode is second to none and most games that don't appear to want to run under Vista soon run fine with compatibility set for it.

Do these games require additional drivers for DX or GFX cards (8800gts specifically)? Im having problems with any of these games on vista, all directx errors. For more info on the problems im having with these games check out my other post reguarding DX9 and 10 and my issues with them.

Cant wait for the new HD 2900xtx that ati are making, rumoured to make the 8800 look outdated.

Although personally I think the delay with the card is that the one they origninally made was no where near as good as the 8800, so they had to redesign a whole new card.

From all the reviews I've read thus far the 8600 seems decidedly lack luster, it's not as good as you might expect but it seems to perform better by comparison on newer more demanding games than on the likes of say FEAR or Quake 4, it's not near in pro rata performance wise with the comensurate ratio of shaders and pipelines for instance, despite being clocked higher thanks to using a smaller transistor imprint.

Mind you even Nvidia are still not admitting they've got the drivers good enough yet even the 150 series (that was some jump in version numbers from 100 all the way to 150, wonder why ?).

Erm, it won't actually, ATI have yet to produce a DX10 capable card. Without a Nvidia 8800 or lessor 8XXX series GPU it runs in DX9 as does everything else so far. Just think if you ever get a DX10 card how much better it will look then.

Vista uses DX10 as it's native API for graphics but the program instructions must be coded to use DX10 shaders fully, if a card other than a DX10 GPU is used everything runs in a prior version of DX, each of which is fully backwards compliant with all previous engines so despite running DXDIAG to discover you have DX10 means absolutely nothing unless your hardware is up to it, which ATI isn't yet.

Here is ATI's quoted boast for that card,

Im playing Farcry, I have an ATI radeon X850 256 Card and wioth the DX10 it looks stunning, no issues at all so far ...

Incidentaly if playing Battlefield 2 you need to run Punkbuster in Admin mode or you cant play Multiplayer on a lot of servers ... apart from that it too runs ok

Nope couldn't have put it better myself. If its not dodgy drivers (which it rarely ever is) its overheating. Another problem is people never open their computers up and hoover the dust out once in a while. Easiest way at making sure your comp dont overheat, that and adding more fans (or water cooling if your s***ing money :P).

Well, I don't know what to say really? :)

All I know from experience, is that BSOD's are usually a conflict between hardware and memory, overheating, or dodgy memory or perhaps faulty hardware..
All my previous BSOD's (many over the years :D ) were from hardware, not the OS itself.

Example: A few years back, I had a pair of 6600gts in sli.
They were not cheapies either, they were leadtech factory OC'ed jobbies.
That setup was never stable, so I ditched one of them, and things improved, but occaisionally during BF2 or F.E.A.R it would BSOD or restart.
I got quite pissed off with this issue, so I knuckeled down and did some homework, got a temp reader (physical) and found my GFX card was overheating. I replace the stock cooler, and blam! No more issues.
Same thing happened after I upgraded to the 7900gt.
As far as I'm aware, no 7900 GT has stock memory cooling, so I got a zalman with memory sinks, and once again, no issues since.
I doubt half of the issues people are having are actually to do with vista itself.
Motherboard configuration and such can play havoc, as can poorly designed systems.
Its easy to blame the OS though.

I could be wrong though :D

memory error meaning?? not enough memory? other then that.. I get problems with my battlefield 2142. It crashes alot. I have 2gb of ram and a 7800gt oc 256 mb card.

Those sound more like hardware issues rather than Vista issues dude.
BSOD is usually related to hardware, particularly memory.

hey, i treid running battlefield 2142 as thats on the list, before it evan close to starting to install, it just crashes straight away to the blue screen of death,

i tried company of heros, and that says compatible with vista on the back of the box that just crashes an never ever goes away forcing me to switch computer off by the mains,

i tried sending a message on my own topic but for hours noone replied someone please help me

well im glad someone has gotten something to work, i own 112 pc games and ive tried every single one of them a total of 27 will run on vista, pathetic, a few more will boot up but will crash within 5 minutes of loading the game

Hi,

I've seen this game list before billed as a DX10 list but when I check out some games eg Flight Simulator X they are DX9 not DX10 Shader Model 4.0.

Is this just a list of Vista compatible games or is it a list of the DX10 Shader Model 4.0 games that will be available? If just compatible, are any of these going to be patched from DX9 to use DX10 Shader 4.0 capabilities?

Finally, do you have a definitive list of games available that are specifically DX10 Shader 4.0?
