Nonsense. IE6 for example is much faster than Firefox and even IE7 is not really beaten by FF.

If you want speed, then you need Opera.

Me too and since most modern hard drives using DMA with more than 2mb of cache ram of their own , dedicated to storing small files pending any write delays, ramdrives are inconsequential for the purpose suggested, we are looking at saving fractions of milliseconds at best it would be better to change IE's start priority and ensure the RTC (real time clock) is using IRQ 8, but I agree it was a very good presentation.

Also depending on what starts in which order when booting any Win from 98 onwards will reassign temp\internet directory back to the default location if it doesn't start the ramdrive in the correct order, drive letters are assigned on every boot and you could find you have wasted memory creating a ramdrive that's not being used, unless you want to manually start the ramdrive and change the cache location for each session.[/quote]

I may be wrong, but IE7 may store the temp files in RAM in the first place(rendering the ramDisk useless), then transfer to the HD upon closer of the explorer.

I'm very skeptical of this tweak...

The original intent of caching internet files to disk was to avoid having to download them over the internet every time you visit the same page. The reason is, it's much faster to load a file from your HD than it is to download it over the internet.

Now while I don't argue that loading a file from RAM is much faster than loading it from your HD, the problem with using a RAMDISK for temporary internet files is that they are wiped out every time you reboot your computer. As a result, every time you start you computer and go to your favorite websites, you need to download the files all over again instead of just pulling them from your hard drive.

Hence, this tweak actually HURTS your performance whenever you visit a page on different sessions (between reboots). It may speed up browsing somewhat during the same session, but this is probably not worth the hit you take every time you start your PC.

One other thought... any unused RAM will be utilized by Vista for superfetch (pre-loading files from disk to memory) and it may be the case that superfetch loads temporary internet files for you from disk to RAM before you need them. I'm not sure of this, but it might be doing this anyway. If this is the case, this tweak is totally uncalled for.

Sorry, one final thought. This tweak MAY actually be beneficial if using a high speed USB flash drive for the same reason that Vista Readyboost is helpful on some systems. A top-of-the-line high speed USB flash drive will have very good read performance and minimal seek times compared to a typical HD... so using such a device for caching temporary internet files may be a really good compromise between a RAMDISK and a normal HD. The poor write speed of most USB flash drives won't be a hinderance since the files are only coming in as fast as your internet connection anyway. I'd like to test this out... if only I had a good high-speed USB flash drive! :)

How come IE7 is so sluggish on Vista as opposed to IE7 on XP?

By slow I'm not refering to internet connectio speed but the response to elements such as rollover buttons. There's definately a drag in response on Vista.

Can you please give me some of the links for the videos you are not able to play??

I have been trying online videos for around an hour and I can't find one not working because of the tweak...

Also I recommend you to try TCP Optimizer. In combination with this tweak it will make your Internet surfing damn! fast. Give it a try and see what you get... The TPC Optimizer is a simple exe file, it will create a backup automatically just in case you want to revert changes, but that won't be necesary....:w00t:

Hi guys,

Finally after some hours of testing I have my new Tweak for Windows Vista. I have tested this tweak in my own system, which includes my host system and My Virtual Machine as well.

I would like to add that this Tweak is recommended for users with 1GB RAM or more, users with 512MB RAM should not use it for now, or they should try it only after increasing the Virtual Memory (VM) in their systems.

What is it about? Ohhh I almost forget to let you know... :)

My Tweak is about "Speeding up Internet Explorer browsing experience in Windows Vista by a 50%". Yes, it does really gets that fast. Try it yourself and see it...

We will be using a little software called 'RAMDISK'. What does it do? Well, it will create a Virtual Hard Drive in your computer using your system's physical RAM. Don't be scared, we will adjust the Virtual Hard Drive size to something around 60-80MB (taken from your physical RAM as I said before).

First off we will need to do some little changes to the IE options. Here is what to do:

Open Internet Explorer. Click Tools/ Internet Options. Under 'Privacy Tab' look for "Settings" and click 'Advanced'.

Check the box 'Override automatic cookie handling' and select:
First-party Cookies (Accept) Third-party cookies (Block). See the screenshot bellow

Click 'OK' to close the 'Advanced Privacy Settings' window.

Back to the 'Internet Options' window, select the 'Advanced' Tab. Scroll down the Settings options and click 'Disable Phishing Filter'. See screenshot below

When finish Click 'Apply', 'OK' to save changes and exit the Internet Options window.

NOTE: We need to force the compatibility of this program to make it work under Windows Vista 5384. Not a big deal, here is what to do:

Extract the software to any folder in your system. Open the folder where you extracted RAMDISK into and Right click the Setup.exe application. Select 'Compatibility' Tab and check the following:

-Compatibility Mode
(Run this program in compatibility Mode for 'Windows XP Service Pack2')
-Privilege Level (Run this program as an administrator)

Click 'Apply' and 'OK' to save changes and exit that window. See screenshot bellow

Once the compatibility has been forced, it is time to install our little prog. Double click the Setup.exe application. Eventually the installation windows will pop-up. Click Next, Accept the License Agreement, click 'Install' and wait for the installation process to finish. During the installation process you will be prompt with a Windows Security warning, just ignore it and Click 'INSTALL"... It will take some time to finish the installation. Please be patient and let it finish. See the screenshot bellow

NOTE: If you are prompt to reboot your computer, do so and let it reboot. After Login back onto Windows you can find the program in your Control Panel. Click Start/ Control Panel/ RAMDISK. See screenshot bellow

Once installed it is about time to configure it so we can finally go ahead with our plan. Click Finish and welcome to the Virtual Hard Drive we are going to create. Why do we need this Virtual Hard Drive? You will find the answer later. Keep reading... :) If you had to reboot the computer before using the program, you can find it in your Control Panel after login back in. See the screenshot before...

Under 'General Tab', Select the Drive letter you want to assign to your new Virtual Hard Drive, Select 'Automatic Startup' and 'Emulate a local Hard Disk'. Select the 'Geometry Tab'and set the 'Disk Size' to 65MB.

NOTE: It is important not to go larger than 80MB because the Virtual Hard Drive will be using your Physical RAM and going highter in the VHHD size could negative impact your overall system performance. After setting the new values we will need to restart the computer over again so we can see the new Virtual Hard Drive. See screenshots bellow

If everything was as we hoped we should now be able to see our new VHDD in your system. Simply open 'My Computer' and look for the new Hard Drive (Z: ) in my case. See the screenshot bellow

Wohhoooo... we are almost done. So to finish our trick and finally enjoy our new browsing experience we are going to move the Internet Temporary Folder into our new Virtual Hard Drive. Here is the importance of using those 60-80MB RAM of our system. Basically I will explain it really quick. [color=#FF0000]The time your System reads data from your Physical RAM it is almost twice faster than the time your system reads from your Physical Hard Drive. So with this said we can figure out that our browsing experience should be almost twice faster as well since the Temporary Internet Files will be kept in memory instead writting and reading them from the Physical Hard Drive. Another good thing about this Tweak is that we won't have to worry about cleanning the Temporary Internet Files anymore because everytime we restart our system the Virtual Hard Drive will be cleaned up. Remember that all the data will be allocated in the System's RAM and the information in the RAM it's automatically "erased" everytime we restart or turn off our system.[/color]

So with all this in mind let's go finish our trick!

Open Internet Explorer. Click Tools/ Internet Options. Under 'General Tab', look for'Browsing History' and click 'Settings'. Change the 'Disk Space to use' to 60MB and click 'Move Folder' under 'Current Location'. Browse to your new Virtual Hard Drive, select it and click OK. See screenshot bellow

Prompt: Windows will log you off to move the Temporary Internet Files to the new location (Virtual Hard Drive). Select Yes and let the system log off. After login back onto Windows, Open your Internet Explorer and enjoy!!

Your system will be running all Temp internet Files in your Physical RAM so we expect much more browsing speed while surfing the Internet. Last tip, if you wanna check the Temporary Internet Files, simply open 'My PC' navigate to your Virtual Hard Drive and check it out. you can erase all temps, etc. RAMDISK will act as another Hard Drive in your system... See the last screenshot

For those Geeks that love Firefox as much as I do, here is how to do the same with it:

After finishing the RAMDISK Installation, open Firefox to move the Cache Folder into our new Virtual Hard Drive. Here is what to do:

- Open Firefox
- In the address bar type in: "about:config" without quotes
- Look for the entry of: "browser.cache.disk.parent_directory". Double click on that and you should be able to change it.

If you don't have it, then click on any entry, then do a right click and select New/ String, and enter the above (browser.cache.disk.parent_directory) in the first box, and the location in the second (Z:\\) in my case. See screenshots bellow for reference...
