Many of these problems to do with specific versions of one updated DX9 library file can often be solved by removing and reinstalling the game, as discussed in other topics, during the setup if you are asked if you want to install or update DX9 (even if we know Vista has DX10) agree to it, the particular file causing this common problem seems to be the August 2006 version of the d3dx9_XX.dll file currently different games use versions from (where xx is ) 24 to 32 inc. so the error message is really non specific but installing the DX9 version that comes on the game disk usually in the 'resdist' directory should fix the problem, it will only replace any missing or corrupt files not overwrite any others.

ATI cards are the main culprit for this but Nvidia do have the same problem sometimes, if you can find the correct file on the game DVD, probably in a 'cab' file just drop it into the \windows\system32\   folder and that's it.
