| | | | I have Vista Home Premium on a new machine connected by ethernet directly to
a router. I have a NAS connected directly to the router. I have other XP
machines connected by wireless to the router. The XP machines can use the
NAS normally. I have been able to get the NAS to show up on Vista as a
network device, and I can see the first level of file folders on the NAS.
When I attempt to open a file folder on the NAS then windows explorer makes
an attempt to read but never reaches an end. I tried to use a "net use"
command to send a token to the NAS (thinking that Vista Home Prem does not
remember tokens) but to no avail. Has anyone attempted and been successful
with this? What solutions may there be? Thanks.

You need to contact the NAS mftr.'s tech support. Most NAS devices run
some flavor of embedded Linux and Vista requires some special handling
with Samba. This can be gotten around when connecting to *nix computers
by either updating the Samba version on the *nix machines and editing
smb.conf or changing Vista's security settings. Unfortunately, you
usually don't have the ability to update Samba and manually edit the
smb.config file on a NAS. Some NAS mftrs. have written new firmware
which takes care of the issue. Some have not.
So your next step is to contact the NAS mftr.'s tech support.
