I am running Vista Ultimate - my computer is directly networked to the main
computer and is set up for printer - file - etc sharing.
Attached to the main computer is a Lexmark X5470 multi purpose printer. From
my machine I can print with no problem at all , but I cannot get the scanner
to operate !.
In my network sharing centre - the printers are shown as X 5470 as a
printer and also a seperate X 5470 as a Fax.
Any ideas ???

Scanners are not normally networkable... there are some scanners that
support networking, Epson has a few, they start at about $3500.

I am always amazed that anyone would even WANT to
share a scanner.

Consider the workflow:

You take your document over to the scanner.
You walk back to your computer and do the scan.
You walk back over to the scanner and retrieve your document.
You walk back to your computer.

Dumb.

Just scan at the computer the scanner's attached to and save the
image over the network to your remote machine.

Saves TWO trips across the room (or dept).

O.K. but not quite so simple !! the main computer is in another building .
Won't bore you with the logistics, but there WAS a very good reason behind
this.
