Okay, this is what I'm getting:

Turned my comp on this morning, it went to the Toshiba page, then to the page with the little green bars, then the screen went black, as usual before loading the logo, but instead of loading the logo it just sits there, black screen and the moveable mouse. If I let it sit there long enough it just reboots.

What I've done:

I've tried to do a Startup repair which went on for about 15 mins before it told me that it had no fucking idea how to fix my problem.

I can't load from a back up point because there are none.

I CAN load into Safe Mode, just fine. (I'm using the network one and this is how I'm even on here).

I've tried loading from Last Known Good Config but I get the same junk.

Honestly, I'm kind of computer retarded so I really don't know what else to do beyond this point. I'm guessing though, that it must be software related since it will go into Safe Mode without any problems.

Oh, also, after force rebooting it like 10 times it no longer goes to the "Uh, your comp shut down weird last time, how do you want to boot it this time?" option, it just says Start Normally or Start uP Repair. I don't know if that's relevant or if it's just because I've forced restart so many times.

Sorry to tell you Ashe, but I had the same problem last week after Microsoft Updates were installed. I've talked to several others who had the same thing happen after receiving automatic updates. I too got stuck with the dreaded black screen, white cursor and no repair options available. I hate to tell you this but I ended up having to do a complete factory reinstall. In my case I couldn't even get on my p.c. in Safe Mode. It wouldn't allow any repair or even a return to the last known good configuration. It also claimed there were no restore points, but that's my sad story. Have you tried any or all of the options available to you when you hit F8 while booting? If not, give that a go. Maybe you'll get lucky. Otherwise, you may be in for a factory reinstall yourself, just beware that you may lose all your files and programs. My Gateway reinstall created a backup of the existing system but none of the program files were operable. Fortunately I was able to retrieve document files, photos and music from the backup directory created during factory reinstall. I'm actually on the forum today to find out if anyone knows whether or not I need to delete all of the backup files created during the reinstall. Good luck to you.

G'day

I am using a Lenova laptop. I was using XP on it but decided to upgrade to Vista because my DVD burner would not operate. It started to work once I put Vista Home Premium on it. Apparently the Lenova is designed to use Vista.

All was cool until the last Windows Vista automatic update. After that, I am finding that my laptop either gets to the white screen and freezes. Or it boots after the black screen with white text asks if I want to startup normally. (mind you, I can't change or select any other option so I don't know why it asks that question) If I click the enter button at this point, my laptop starts but I sometimes I can't use my USB cable external keyboard or mouse(both Microsoft products). Handy that. Talk about annoying.

Notice that I also started experiencing problems after the last Windows Vista automatic upgrade. That said, can we expect Windows to fix the problem it has caused???

And is there any way to alter the timing of the Windows automatic updating? In my case, it happens (no warning either) in the middle of my working morning (yes I am a working stiff who uses his laptop to put bread on the table)

And I am also a computer dunderhead. I wouldn't dare to try and install some computer boot repair program. Who knows what I might end up with.

Cheers

Sorry to hear about the problems you're having due to Windows Updates.

Been seeing this kind of stuff for nearly two years now and still can't understand why:
1) Vendors don't configure their machine to default to Notify instead of Update
2) Microsoft can't fix their own code!!

In answer to your question about MS fixing this problem, don't hold your breath! This is not the first time that Windows Updates has trashed machines, and probably won't be the last.

Best solution I've found is to turn off Automatic Updates altogether and have Windows only notify your or download the updates. That way, the system doesn't reboot when you're in the middle of something, and if a big batch of updates pops up, you have advance notice with time to make a backup or otherwise save your files before doing the update.

G'day

Not half as sorry as I am, I bet (LOL). And I am not really surprised that Microsoft won't be interested in fixing its screwups.

I have taken your suggestion and turned off auto updates. Thanks for the tip.

Unfortunately, it leads me to another problem. In my first post, I said I am a computer dunderhead.

So I would appreciate your advice on what sort of updates I should let install. For instance there is one there now that updates something called Defender. I already have an anti virus installed.

Cheers

Windows Defender updates are harmless, so go ahead and accept them.

What I do to protect my home machine is more than most because I run five different OS's on it -- and it would be a major pain to have to rebuild them all from scratch due to a system crash -- but some basic rules still apply.

1) Driver updates -- do NOT do them through Windows Update. You can right-click on each update and read the details. If it's a driver update, reject it. More trashed machines have resulted from driver updates (including mine!) than anything else.

2) Security updates, office updates, MSRT Windows Email Junk Filter -- probably all OK. But, use your machine a lot just after a pack of updates so that, in the event of a problem, you have a recent restore point to go back to.

3) Service Packs -- a no-no, unless you have made a complete image backup first. Last SP for Vista trashed LOTS of machines due to a "minor bug" in the default driver loading -- it defaulted to loading two drivers that conflicted with one another, if you had an AMD 64-bit processor. It required complete reintallation to fix!

Hope that helps.

G'day

Again, my thanks. Again, I will take your advice.

I note what you say about driver updates. I recently purchased a Brother printer that would not print anything from one of my business programs. So the service tech for the business program told me to get a printer driver update. I did that but installed it by itself after downloading it from the printer maker's website. Would that have been what has caused my problem? It was not a Windows update.

And I note also that my version of Vista Home Premium came with SP 1 in it.

As for 5 OS's. You are a braver man than I am Gunga Din (an old Aussie saying)

The driver updates that are the most dangerous are video and hard disk (i.e., chipset SATA drivers). Both of these are readily supplied by the vendors of video cards (for the first) and motherboard chipsets (for the second).

Audio drivers and printer drivers are not as risky because you don't have to worry about your machine being unusable if they fail; you simply do a driver rollback and you're OK. But if you have no video or you can't access your hard drive, you have no way of bringing up Vista to do a driver rollback.

I would doubt that the printer driver did any damage.

To update the forum on what has been happening since my last post.

I have always used a virus protection so I had to re-install that. Yes, Vista had uninstalled my virus protection. How dumb is that. I did not notice for a couple of days.because my virus protection runs in the background. So my first virus and spyware scans took hours to complete. Fortunately no viruses. But I was lucky.

I also found that Vista does not have the latest chipset for my Lenovo. It only has the XP version. So I downloaded the latest (correct) version. But as soon as I installed it, Vista updates over-rode it and put it back to what it had. the XP version.

I used my Vista installation disk and restored back as far as I could. which was not far at all. But it got me back to a situation where I could get my Lenovo to boot correctly.

Then I turned off the Vista automatic updates. Vista did not like that and protested mightily. I can install updates if I want to of, course.

If anyone else has trouble with Vista updates, please check that all the programs that you have on your computer are still there and working properly.

Cheers. And thanks for your assistance
