Hello everyone,
A silly question. Is it ok to let Avast scan my internet mails ? Should
I terminate that ?

Hi t-4-2,
If your using Windows Mail, then I would terminate that one. Windows
Mail is very sensitive to 3rd party programs poking around in it and can
cause the stuck message problem. You will still be protected by Avast's
other shields from viruses.
Hope this helps,
Shawn

Email scanning is bad, see
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm
Not only that, but the mere presence of the email scanning engine
can cause problems with Windows Mail. If you installed Avast using
its default install option, uninstall it, then reinstall, but select
*custom* install, which then allows you to unselect its troublesome
email scanning module.

I am going to do some research on this. I am a Avant! user and have
been for at least two years. Both on my XP system and for quite a while
since I upgrade my hardware and software and started using Ultra 64bit.
I personally have found avant! the most most reliable of any anti-virus
product I have ever used. That is from using anti-virus software for
many, years, like Mcafee, Norton (Symantec), etc, where I DID have lots
of problems and used to always have a virus slip through.
I have found that ALL anti-virus products, since they are running in
RAM, sometimes have some sensitivity to some software that is out there.
I am one, when I am installing something that might be RAM and/or CPU
intensive, will temporarily turn off all of the programs that I have
running in RAM, then clean out my temp files and most of my cookies,
then do a re-boot first.
I will find out specifically about "Vista (Windows Mail), and Avant!
Since avant! makes their money selling their network level product,
that is run on mostly larger commercial networks, I would think that
they would be as on top of things any anyone. The following is a link
that might help give some information.
'Free antivirus - avast! 4 Home Edition'
*
BUT ....I could be wrong.* I will follow up on this.
Lord knows I have had more problems with Mcafee and Nroton/Symantec.

Hello Shawn and Jon,
Thank you for your replies. I'll terminate internet mail scanning for
now. I can always turn it back on if I want to.

Avant is a web browser, avast! is an AV program ... Don't mix them up
guys ...
And no there is no need to turn off the email scanning with avast!,
infact it's better to leave it on so that it scans your emails and
attachments, that is why it's there for. AFAIK avast! doesn't cause any
problems with Windows Mail. Certainly not on my machine.

If you have any questions regarding avast! just ask around on avast!
forum, friendly people there ... I believe you already have the link to
the forum.

Most antivirus programs that cause problems in Windows Mail are
rather slow about doing it, so one person's experience with them
not having caused problems in Windows Mail is not enough to
prove they never will.

If email scanning hasn't caused you a problem yet, you've been
lucky so far. Read this article to see why email scanning is not
recommended:

Hey Darth,
Avast still protects your computer from malicious software even if you
disable e-mail scanning via resident protection and others because it
uses the same definition files to scan the content of attachments as
they are opened and launched
I also dont remember Brink suggesting not to use Avast?
