Your system still boots with just 2GB, correct? Can you boot with
either 2GB stick in slot 1 and slot 2 empty? How about if you test
each stick in slot 2 with slot 1 empty?
Memtest86+ is a bootable CD, you just need to create the CD (using any
PC, or your PC with only 2GB installed) Vista won't be involved in the
actual execution of the test.

That, and try running memtest with both. If you can't do that, you have
hardware problems, Vista isn't involved or related at all.
Vista's memory diagnostic wouldn't hurt either, but I'd tend to prefer
memtest86+ here since it's based on a different OS, so it can rule out
whether Vista is part of the problem or not.
