For 32-bit use 3 - 4 gig.
For 64-bit use 8 gig if possible.

All editions of 32 bit Vista can use 4GB. If more than 4GB is on the
computer, these editions will still only use 4GB. Vista Starter has a paper
limitation of 1GB, but will use 4GB. The actual memory available to the
user will be less than 4GB but the actual amount varies according to the
hardware configuration of the computer.
Vista Home Basic x64 can use 8GB, Vista Home Premium x64 can use 16GB, and
Vista Business x64 and Ultimate x64 can use 128+ GB.
Please download and read the Windows Vista Product Guide from microsoft.com
for a side-by-side comparison of all Vista features by edition.
