| | | | I installed IE 8 beta 1 and decided to remove it per MS' instructions.
The system reverted to IE7 but now when I launch IE, it crashes with a
DEP error. I followed MS' help instructions and added IE7 to the DEP
exclusion list. However, IE7 still crashes with the same error.
I wanted to reinstall IE7 but I could not find it on MS' web site.
- Is IE 7 for Vista available as a separate download?
- Any other suggestions with regards to the DEP error?
Note: I have FF3 and Opera 9.5 on my system. I also use AVANT as a
front end to IE. The interesting factor is that AVANT works just
fine... which I see as odd being that it must have IE to work with.

The only download for IE7 is the XP version. IE7 is bundled with Vista and
so there is no download for Vista. It is not an add-on. Have you tried
opening a command window and running 'sfc /scannow'?

Nope... I wasn't aware of that command (what does it do?). I will run
it later and report back. However, as I understand, I will have to
wait for IE8's release before I can add a MS browser from their web
site. Hopefully, the sfc /scannow command will help.

Follow-up --> I ran the command and it reported that there were errors
which could not be corrected. It pointed me to the CBS.LOG. I opened
the file went to the section pertaining to today's activity. There , I
saw many items. Unfortunately, I do not know how to interpret the
data.
Shall I assume that one way to correct this is to re-install SP1
followed by current updates?

It is the System File Checker and it finds and replaces any corrupted system
files when you use the /scannow parameter.

SFC itself writes the cbs.log so delete it if you want.
Whether installing SP1 would correct IE7 is the question and I don't think
so since a fresh copy is not one result. SP1 does contain updates for IE7
but SP1 does not include a fresh copy of the complete program.
If you have a standard Vista dvd I would do an in-place-upgrade instead.
Now is the time to do it because the hard drive files and the dvd files are
the same service pack level. After you reinstalled SP1 an in-place-upgrade
would not be possible without a Vista SP1 integrated dvd.
The consequence is that the OS is replaced with a fresh copy including of
course IE7. Your apps, files, and settings are not disturbed and you don't
have to reinstall drivers and such. You do need to backup your files and
settings against the off-chance that something goes wrong. You run an
in-place-upgrade from the desktop. With Vista running insert the dvd and
when the splash screen appears select Install Now and be sure to choose
Upgrade Install when offered the choice of Upgrade Install or Custom
Install.
This way you at least know what you have before reinstalling SP1.
If you plan on installing IE7 beta 2 when it releases, be sure SP1 is in
place first.
I hope I have understood your situation.

Well, I reinstalled IE8 beta 1 and functionality has returned. So I
will keep this version on my system and migrate to beta 2 and then to
gold when ready. In the meantime, IE doesn't crash anymore when
invoked.
Too bad that the only way to restore IE7 in Vista is through the
process you defined earlier. But then again, I opted to try IE8b1
after IE7 started having problems. Caveat Emptor!

Just remember that the rule is that you can only roll back as far as the
version of IE that was installed at the time the current service pack was
installed.
