| | | | I have an older computer, running XP, and I used Microsoft Digital Library,=
to keep track of about 2K images.
I now have a new computer, running Vista, and have used the "transfer files=
" (using a USB) option, on Vista, to import all the photos, to the new HD. =
I also installed the old Microsoft Digital Image Suite (including the "libr=
ary"), on the new Vista=A0HD.
Some of the photo files transferred just fine - dates taken, labels, etc.; =
however, a bunch of them transferred with totally incorrect dates taken, an=
d missing, or no labels.
Needless to say, to fix this mess, on an individual photo file basis, is go=
ing to take forever. (I did change a few of the dates taken, and added labe=
ls, using the Photo Gallery, on Vista, and it did work, but there are tons =
of them, still wrong.)
Please help, or point me to some info.

Lots of info keep scrolling...
There is a VIsta compatibility update for
DIS2006 that you may want to install.
MS Digital Image 2006

DIS 2006 has a database called Pictures.pd3.
It may be worth a try to copy the file and use
it to replace the Pictures.pd3 file on your Vista
machine.
The path to the file on your XP machine
should be:
C:\Documents and Settings\\
Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\
POD\Pictures.pd3
If you cannot find the file...open a folder and
go to...Tools / Folder Options / View tab...
Tick...Show hidden files and folders / Apply / OK.
In Windows Vista...your Pictures.pd3
database file should be found at the
following location:
C:\Users\>username<\AppData\Local\
Microsoft\POD\Pictures.pd3
If you cannot find the file, it may be hidden.
On your Vista machine you can find your
database file with with an Advanced Search
for .pd3
Go to...Start / Search / Advanced Search.
Check the box..."Include non-indexed, hidden,
and system files" Enter .pd3 in the Name field
and left click the Search button.

Does Windows Vista Photo Gallery
read keywords from DIS2006 and
display them as tags in the Gallery?

Thanks for all your help, John. Looks like a mess, one way, or the other. I
downloaded the DIS2006 update, and Live Photo Gallery". Not sure I'm computer
savy enough to start changing all the stuff you mention. Guess I'll just
change all the dates/labels one at a time, on Vista computer.
In my opinion, instead of trying to invent more bells/whistles, programmers
should concentrate on making it all WORK correctly, before it is brought to
market, instead of leaving the messes up to the poor consumer, to test, and
fix!
Thanks again.

I think the issue stems from the fact
that most library type programs have
a proprietary database that catalogs
metadata that cannot be written back
to the image files. In the absence of
this database...some data is lost.
FWIW...Windows Photo Gallery has
one also...Pictures.pd4.
Sorry...but all I can do is offer the info
I have available. Maybe it would be

You've been a great help, John, and I appreciate it. I tried to get
Microsoft's help, the other day, but they palmed me off on Dell, since the OS
was bundled. Dell's "help" is in C. America, or India, w/people reading
scripts. I gave up. (It took me two hours, on the phone w/them, just to get
monitor cables, which the failed to ship!
And, I have spent about 8 hours, with many more to come, fixing one file at
a time, thru "Gallery". Doing labels 1st, then going to tackle the dates.
Best, David
