I am using windows Vista  basic edition. 

newdev.exe file is corrupted on my system. Because of this no my system is is unable to install any external device via my USB port. It detects the hardware but cannot install it.

Please give me some suggestion as to how this can be rectified....

Take a look at the two pinned posts in this forum: the USB driver problem and removing drivers.

If those don't work, use your Vista DVD to boot to a command prompt and enter "sfc /scannow" (without the asterisks). Vista will then replace your system files using the DVD.
