| | The laptop in question has an ATI 9100 IGP with 128mb shared memory. It used to have 1gb of ram, but one chip broke, so I'm down to 512mb including the shared video memory. Also using Intel (mobility i think) 1.6ghz cpu. I'm not looking for fancy aero effects or fast response (which it has most of the time), but I would like to have it play videos at least at a normal speed. I am using WMP11 and have all Windows updates. Whenever I open a file, the sound would play at a normal speed, but the video would play at least 50% slower. Video speed is also inconsistent. I am guessing that the problem is because Vista is using a generic VGA driver. XP graphics is slower with default drivers also, until I install the OEM drivers. I can't find any drivers for Vista though. I think I've had Vista on this laptop before with no video playback problems. |

| Despite what MS may claim is the "minimum" memory requirement for Vista, my personal experience is that a full 1GB (with none used up for video) is the practical minimum for any decent performance. 1.5GB will give fairly good performance, and all other things being equal, 2GB should give you about the same performance as was the case in XP.
[Now, before all the Vista-fans start flaming me, I'm not quoting specs here, I'm reiterating my past experience using several different Vista machines with different memory amounts]
So, basically, 512MB, less some used for video, is going to give really poor Vista performance. With that little memory, I would expect all kinds of things to either work really s..l..o..w, or not at all. Recommend boosting your memory to 1.5GB -- for decent performance.
