| Hi,
Basically I have a 250gb external USB HDD which i have partitioned on HFS+ using MacDrive.
Recently I was copying some data across when programs started freezing up and unfortunatly so did the window controlling the transfer. After checking no data was being written to the disc (watched for the red LED) i unplugged it and rebooted the system. When back on my desktop I plugged my HDD back in and when accessing it the majority of data was missing off it and folders were reading ridiculous sizes (40TB for example) although the used space was reading correctly for what is actually on it.
After a day or two of leaving it alone I came back to have another go at fixing it and now vista blue screens every time i connect it, when it's connected on boot it runs chkdisk and has tried to fix it to no avail. Under linux it still reads some to most of the data but i would like to recover as much as possible and don't know how to go about it with the HFS+ partitioning and no access to a mac.
Any help very much appreciated.

| Its usually caused by a bad driver creating a memory address incorrectly. Try to reinstall the mac drive driver.
Also, if you have no access to a mac, why are you using HFS+ to format a drive with?

| Could be wrong, but chkdsk being an MS utility, I wasn't aware that it was able to work with HFS-formatted partitions.
Also, any time you unplug an external drive without first properly shutting it down, you run the risk of totally corrupting the file system on the drive -- regardless of the file system being used. I don't use Macs, so they may be an exception, but with Windows and Linux OS's, you must do a "safe removal" before unplugging or powering down the drive. This insures that all cached writes are completed and all index/directory information is updated.

| Macs have worse corruption rates and errors than Windows does.
Either way, if you arent using a mac you shouldnt be using HFS and CHKDSK isnt going to do a thing for HFS.
Format it FAT32 or NTFS.
If you are using Vista SP1, format it in exFAT |

| Thanks for the suggestions but I've just given up trying to get it to work and am using R-Studio to try and recover the data, after which I shall not be using HFS+ anymore 
I have been using HFS+ because I use the drive with my xbox360 and want to store files over 4GB.
If anyone can suggest any better data recovery software that would be great  |
