Anyone had any problems with an upgrade recently? I put in the latest NVIDIA optional upgrade yesterday on my Dell C521 and, coincidence or not, on first reboot all my USB ports had mysteriously disabled i.e. I had no keyboard/mouse so could get no further than the login screen. Tried various options which DID give me use of keyboard and mouse i.e. reset the BIOS factory defaults (though USB was reported active) and booted from my Vista reinstallation CD to attempt repair that way but nothing worked. Eventually bit the bullet and laboriously re-built the whole PC from scratch. Would appreciate any knowledge anyone has of this and if I might have been spared the agony of a complete rebuild by some other course of action.

Thanks,

David.

The only thing I can suggest, which is after many peoples complaints of a previous Nvidia update supplied via Windows update which wrongly identified the NV4 chip and reset everyones activation after causing BSOD and having to reinstall a correct driver, is to never download a driver from anywhere other than the manufacturers site.

I got caught out by that one as I hadn't noticed it in the list of updates, I have never used auto update, I think you need to be able to choose which updates you need.

Thanks for the advice which I shall adopt as a general principle. I guess it should apply equally to the Dell Support Centre which is currently inviting me to download an NVIDIA driver for my HD controller. Maybe this is the upgrade which crashed my system.

Windows update, following my rebuild yesterday, is also inviting me to install 3 NVIDIA upgrades, one of which will certainly be that I chose to install yesterday and the cause of my subsequent heartache. The upgrades are marked Optional, I only get those marked Recommended or Important automatically so I retain some choice.

Another useful rule of thumb might be to avoid downloading stuff you don't need just because it is there and it is free i.e. if it ain't broke don't fix it.
